The only way I could get it to work was to install Opera Mobile on my storage card (instead of my device), and to not set it as the default browser. I'm not sure if the latter made a difference, but I figure might as well change up as many settings as possible to see if it will keep it from crashing.

That, and I uninstalled the Jar Facebook app - thought that might help/ by freeing up memory or whatever.

Ok, I've got a Samsung BlackJack II, running Windows Mobile 6.0, and I'm getting less and less font of this phone. For voice, text, and basic address book, etc. functions it works fine. But when it comes to Internet, it downright sucks.

I'm unable to update to Windows Mobile 6.5, which means I'm stuck with the most outdated Internet Explorer mobile browser ever. It's horrible, slow, and terribly unreliable.

So I do a Google search for mobile browsers. The Firefox one only works on some Nokia phone, the SkyFire browser captures all my info on my servers - um, no thanks - I already have enough privacy issues dealing with my Facebook account. So the only viable option is the Opera 10 Mobile browser or the Opera 5 Mini.

The Opera 5 Mini doesn't seem to recognize my keypad correctly - instead of the letters I expected to appear when I begin typing, a bunch of weird characters show up - which basically renders Opera 5 Mini unusable.

Opera 10 Mobile on the other hand, is awesome. Here's my problem - I can only run it successfully right after installing it. As soon as I try to launch it at a later date, I get a dreaded "Opera Failed to Reserve Heap...Closing" error, following which the application shuts down.

If I uninstall Opera, restart my phone and re-install it, it will work again; but again - only for a short while. This is driving me crazy!! Short of buying a new phone (since I'm with AT&T I'm going to finally jump on the iPhone bandwagon once iPhone 4 gets released, but until then...), how the heck do I get this browser to work?

I Googled the "failed to reserve heap" error and found virtually nothing on the topic. Strange. Don't people use this browser? Seems to me to be a potential market niche for Opera, especially considering it's lack of penetration in the desktop browser market.

Hi Jeff,

There's several things you can do to reduce Opera memory usage. You'll want to experiment with these, and remember the settings you've changed, so you can switch them back on in the event that a website or web app stops working as a result of the setting change. Also, you can pick and choose which memory settings you want to change - you don't have to do all of them. They all save a different amount of Opera memory, and even making a couple of them should make a difference and help you run more Opera tabs at once without slowing down your PC.

Reducing Opera Memory Usage

The first thing you'll want to do is adjust the appearance of Opera. You can turn off some fancy graphics settings to save memory. Click on the main Opera icon in upper left, and then select "Appearance" (or use the Shift + F12 keys). Change the "Opera Standard" skin to "Windows Native Skin."

In the same menu, deselect "Enable special effects". Hit OK to save your changes.

Next, open a blank tab and type the following in the Opera address bar:
opera:config#UserPrefs
. This will let you visit the main Opera configuration page, where you can adjust all kinds of settings (you may even find some other ones that you want to tweak, independent of the memory settings).

Use Ctrl + F (Find) to locate the following settings and disable them:
- AutomaticRAMCache
- Bittorent support
- Cache > Empty cache on exit
- Favicons (the little icons that appear in the tabs to identify web pages)
- Java
- Opera Sync
- Page Index
- Quicktime (this will only show up if installed)
- Smooth Scrolling
- Speed Dial
- Thumbnails
- Wand

I've switched back to the Opera browser (v.10) recently, because Firefox 3.6 was taking up too much memory, and if I had more than a certain number of tabs open, it would crash.

Besides, I love the new Opera browser. The find functionality now works similar to Firefox (it finds items on the page and highlights them, and even shades out the background so you can easily find the keywords you're looking for).

Anyways, while Opera is working fine, it still appears to be taking up way too much memory (when I check the opera.exe process in task manager).

So, anyone here know some tips for reducing Opera memory usage and consumption?

Yes, there is. I just found it actually on accident - didn't know about it for the longest time. Simply right-click on a tab, and select Undo close tab (second option from the bottom). This should bring back the most recent tab you closed.

I'm not sure, but you can probably set the "depth" level of this undo feature somewhere, so you'll be able to retrieve multiple tabs you've closed in Firefox.

Is there a way to bring back a tab I accidentally closed in Firefox? I know you can use Ctrl+Z in Opera, which I love, to undo any action, including the accidental closing of a tab.

However, using this doesn't work in Firefox, and when I browse to Edit > Undo is grayed out. Is there a way to bring back tabs, besides browsing my history, that I closed accidentally in Firefox?

Ok, I think we may have found a solution. It turns out that by using the Windows Vista/ 7 "Default Program" settings towards the top it appears that there is only a list of file extensions, not protocol associations (URL, HTTP).

However, if you scroll all the way to the bottom, you'll see the protocol associations (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS). In addition, there's a .url extension in the extension list which you can manually set to your browser of choice as well.

Simply manually browse to Shiretoko's (the Shiretoko codename is from Mozilla, incidentally) directory on your PC and select the "firefox.exe" application to open these Internet protocols. Finally, make sure you close and re-open your applications and the Shiretoko (Firefox 64-bit) browser, otherwise the link associations might still not work.

Thanks CWD. I definitely am seeing a performance boost, wow. Firefox 64-bit doesn't lag nearly as much as the 32-bit version did. It also uses less than half the memory (200MB instead of 500MB).

You're right about certain plugins - the Flash thing is a bit of a pain. I'm using IE for the Flash pages for now.

Another thing I've noticed is that links in emails, etc. no longer open up in my browser when I click on them. Is there any way to adjust this? I've got the new 64-bit Firefox (Shiretoko) set as my default browser under "Default Programs", and have it checked to do all things by default, but that doesn't seem to help...

There is indeed a 64-bit version of Firefox, although it's not official. But since Firefox is open source, anyone is allowed to work on and modify the code. This guy has been around for a while, and from what we can tell, the 64-bit version will give you a performance boost on a 64-bit machine. There's also 64-bit versions of Thunderbird available.

Something to note - you may not be able to run 32-bit plugins using the 64-bit version, and since it's not officially supported by Mozilla there's no guarantees it will be updated regularly, or that you'll get support if there's a problem (although so far, updates appear to be regular and reliable).

One glaring incompatibility we should point out is the lack of Adobe Flash Player support, at least in Windows, at the time of this writing. An alpha version of a 64-bit Linux player is available, but not yet a Windows version.

You can find the software at: http://wiki.mozilla-x86-64.com

Is there such a thing as a 64-bit version of Firefox? I've got a pretty hefty PC running 6GB of RAM and Windows 7 64-bit. All my apps seem to be running great, but when I get enough windows (tabs) open in Firefox it really slows things down. I've heard rumors that there's a 64-bit version of Firefox, but can't seem to find it on the Mozilla site.

Hi Sally,

Good question. If at any time elements of your Firefox address bar disappear, you can restore them as follows:

Right-click anywhere in the now empty address bar area (or to the right of the File, Edit, etc. menus)

Select "Customize..."

Drag and drop the elements (address bar, back and forth arrows, stop, home page, refresh, etc.) that are missing back into the navigation bar area and they'll be put back in place.
